Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction
(MBSR)

Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction is the original secular mindfulness course created by Jon Kabat-Zinn, PhD in 1979 for the UMass Medical Center.  JKZ realized that the practices he was learning as a Zen and Insight meditator could be of great benefit to many people who might not be interested in Buddhist or spiritual paths; but that these practices could be universalized, and offered in a non-sectarian context for anyone looking for a way to support physical, emotional and mental health.

The original MBSR class became very successful and some Insight Meditation practitioners, feeling inspired to share these practices with others, began also offering the curriculum. In 1993 Bill Moyers featured Jon's MBSR course on his national show, "Healing and the Mind". From there mindfulness and MBSR started to become more popular; and seeded the current cultural phenomenon of mindfulness.

To this day, however, the original MBSR curriculum remains the 'Gold Standard' in mindfulness education; offering a robust, comprehensive, supported and effective way to learn and integrate the practice of mindfulness.
