The Four Noble Truths & the Eightfold Path:

The Buddha described the path for awakening in a direct and practical way, laying out a path of practice to attain awakening from the cycle of suffering that is part of our human inheritance. The Four Noble Truths sets forth this fundamental insight about the nature of our experience, and includes within it the 8 path factors as a map and guidance to attain liberation from suffering.

Four Noble Truths:

1. There is Suffering, or an un-satisfactoriness that is inherent to our experience ('dukkha')

2. There is a cause for this suffering: 'craving'

3. There is an end to suffering

4. There is a path to the end of suffering - that path is the Eightfold Path!

The Eightfold Path includes the development and practice of these factors:

1. Wise View

2. Wise Intention

3. Wise Speech

4. Wise Action

5. Wise Livelihood

6. Wise Effort

7. Wise Mindfulness

8. Wise Concentration

This class series includes 8 weekly meetings. Each week we will explore a path-factor and how it can be engaged in the context of our own lives and practice.

We will use Bhikkhu Bodhi's freely offered text; The Noble Eightfold Path: The Way to the End of Suffering, along with weekly handouts with homework exercises to integrate into your practice and daily life. In order to receive the emailed handouts, you must be registered using the form below. Bhikkhu Bodhi's book can be downloaded using this link:

While anyone is welcome to drop-in for a single class or select classes within the series; it is encouraged to make a commitment and to participate in the course as a whole, in the same way the path is practiced. None of these path factors exists independently of the others, and the course is designed to offer the most benefit and understanding when it is engaged as a full program.

Classes may include short dharma talks, discussions, interactive exercises and suggested practices to take home each week in order to deepen understanding and promote practical application for the teachings in formal practice and in daily life.

The course, including the rental of the space, materials and teacher support will be based entirely on Dana.  Attendees may offer Dana at each class meeting, or  make a donation for the entire series at one time. (Consider making a donation for the full series to support an ongoing commitment!) A suggested amount to support this class would be $10 - $25 per class meeting, however no one will be turned away for lack of funds.

Cash, checks or online donations are welcome. There is also an option to write a check to the Church where we meet in order to make your donation tax-deductible - checks to the church go directly to our Sangha's space rental. (contact Genevieve at insight.meditation.scottsdale [@] gmail [dot] com for details about this option)

(Although drop-ins will be welcomed - if possible, please use the registration form so that we can plan appropriately for each class meeting)
